Tiger Father and Dog Son

As a Chinsese motto says:”Tiger Father will not have a dog son”,so does tiger mother, Amy CHUA, who is well-known for her new book, Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother. Her book rose many debates in both sides of Pacific Ocean, as the significance of education always matters for families and governments. Parents care about their children’s futuer, meanwhile, politicians think about country’s competence tomorrow.

President Obama mentioned the importance of  education in his State of the Union Address weeks ago, he even recall‘sputnik’to emphasize the crisis the American are facing: Chinese student are able to get a higher soccer in test like math, physics and chemistry. Thomas Friedaman, who is well-known for his book The World is flat, suggested that the turbulence in  Egypt is partly caused by Chinese education system. As the egyptian education system, unlike China, just trained some “the educated unemployables”.

Notwithstanding Chinese students could achieve good rusult in all sorts of test, the sad truth here is, China’s education system is still far from success. The best option for a senior in China’s campus are nothing but go abroad to futher one’s study, especially for those student in top universities. In anther word, China are not capable of keeping its best student inside the country.

Tiger Mother’s accomplishiment seems obvious, for sending children to key university is almost the biggest goal for every parents in China. Students are repeated told that the importance of attending colleges, it’s the only justification why they study so hard. It is probably that one day children would like to say thanks to his/her parents. Still, attending universities is just one of  educations’methords,  rather than  the destiny of education.

As a conlusion, inspite of China’s education system achieved some attaiment, it is still not an ideal example for the world.

Name with Pinyin

Pinyin(拼音) is a way of spelling Chinese character in English, and how we type Chinese character from keyboard. pinyin Even someone tried to use Pinyin displace Chinese character decades ago.

As we know, much unlike westerners, Chinese put their family name before their given name, but when Chinese people go abroad, there are always some blanks need to fill, and mostly, name is necessary. We have to follow the tradition of the West, put our given name before family name. And we someone read those names, it would be pretty weird, say, my Chinese name is SHI Yuhang, but people will read my name as Yuhang SHI, really odds.

According to the news, National Language Committee(never heard before) is going to unify the way of spelling name, family name should before given name in Pinyin.

I have no idea whether this rule could work or not, but at least, to me, someone else could read my name correct is a good thing. But foreigners won’t read this rule…

The Casebooks in China

As we all know, there’s no case law in China, People’s court trail a case simply by its statutes, part of them are made by Renda(Congress), others are made by government. This kind of pattern could be seen in many countries, like France, Germany, and other country had not rule by Britain. Law in these countries are also called ‘government’s law’, contrast to ‘judge’s law’ in Britain and the US.

Even the importance of cases in China could not match the importance of statutes, cases are still matter in the process of studying law. Cases have been selected and piece them into books, most famous casebook in China is People’s Court Casebooks, which made by People’s Supreme Court. There are two editions of this series, one serie is published by its own press, named People’s Court Press, which publish four books each year, each book contain  criminal law, civil law, administrative law, intellectual property, and busniess law. Until 2010, seventy books had been published. The other edition is published by Fazhi(means rule by law in Chinese) Press, this edition is published monthly, and the cases in these two edition are totally different.

Although one could not quote these cases in court, some professors, like Feng Xiang(冯象), who got a J.D. in Yale and a Ph.D. in Harvard, also have Mei Ruao(a judge in Tokyo Trail after World War II) chair in Tsinghua Law School, recommended law school student should read two books, one of them is People’s Court Casebooks, for it provide the best way to understand law in China.

Before I came to law school, I set a goal for myself, which is read all these casebooks before I get a master degree, but unfortunately, even I still have more than a year, it already seems a mission impossible for me.
